From Stephanie McDowall to P.M. Harper and Opposition Leaders
How is it that Canada does not have one political leader who will speak out about the injustices, including torture, that Mr. Mohammad Mahjoub has experienced at the hands of the Canadian Government because of our Government's rendition of Mr. Mahjoub to Guantanomo North and then later while in the Metro Toronto Detention Centre.
It appears clear that none of our Leaders or probably even Mr. Harper have taken the time to seriously review Mr. Mahjoubs case.
Is this because he is a Muslim or has dark skin? Does this man's life count as nothing to any of you ?
Are you truly unconcerned about how this man is still being treated by Canadian authorities? Does this lack of concern mean you approve of the methods being used in the treatment of Mr. Mahjoub ?
When I was growing up in Canada in the 40's and 50's Canada did not have one single politician or leader who would have tolerated or approved of torture against anyone.....no matter who they were. This is no longer the case. In Canada's public school system we were all taught about France's "lettre de cachet" used in the 17th & 18th centuries to imprison someone on a whim and without charge or proof. All Canadian children were taught this was wrong. Now we have Canada's very own "security certificates" which accomplish what 17th century France was doing and our Prime Minister and our Political Leaders seem to have little problem with this. Canada has gone backwards and we are now heading towards barbarianism.
One day the same methods will be used against ordinary Canadians who exercise their democratic rights under our Charter. Already our militarized police forces are seriously abusing their power and behave like Italy's Brown Shirts. What's worse is that our police forces use agents provocateurs to incite violence so they can move in with unnecessary force. The awful police behaviour at our last G20 meeting could not have happened if Mr. Harper's office had not given approval for this kind of abusive behaviour. As Mr. Harper is aware of everything his office is doing, one has to conclude he approved of behaviour designed to terrorize Canadians so they would never again participate in such a demonstration. I can just hear him giving his orders. "Scare the hell out of those demonstrators" or something close to it.
A warning to our elected representatives. One day you may find yourselves on the receiving end of this kind of vicious treatment because a Prime Minister does not like what you have said . This happened in Germany, Italy, France and has happened in several other countries. Your lack of involvement and concern is setting the stage for mistreatment of yourselves and those you love. Canada has lost it's democracy and we can blame all Members of Parliament who have allowed this to happen.
Your job is to protect Canadians and represent their interests. When we elect you we want to believe you have the courage to do this. Are we wrong ? It seems we are.
